“AYAS” Nautical Research Club

“SEA CULTURE – THE CULTURE OF HUMANITY IN THE DIALOGUE OF CIVILIZATIONS

INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE

After “AYAS” Nautical Research Club 30th Anniversary

Yerevan, 21 – 24 October, 2015

1. The Purpose

The purpose of this project is the organization of scientific conference. Conference follows history investigations, experimental history, archeology, seafaring, shipbuilding, ethnography, cultural interactions, development of traditions, recognition of myth historic reliability and the issues referring to the history and culture.
2. General Situation

“AYAS” Nautical Research Club was founded in 1985, in Yerevan.

The range of the Club’s activities is quite wide and include historical aspects of World and Armenian navigation and shipbuilding, reconstruction of ancient Armenian vessels, study of sea routes, old maps, navigation devices, banners, collecting data on Armenian navigators, making underwater archaeological surveys and research.

The Club collected around two thousand historically engaging subjects, recovered 26 ship versions of Great Armenia. All this allowed the Club to arrange 15 thematic exhibitions that had great enthusiastic impact.

Initially the club had two main objectives: build the functional replica of Armenian vessel for future navigation, and create a Maritime Museum in Yerevan. In a result, after 6 years of research and 11 years of the shipbuilding process, 13rd century Armenian trading vessel was launched in the lake Sevan. Two years later the ship, named “Cilicia”, was transported to Poti, where it started its triennial historical navigation around Europe, through the medieval Armenian merchants trade routes. During these three years of navigation (2004-2006), the vessel passes more than 15 000 nautical miles and visited 63 ports in 25 countries.

In 2007 the Club, jointly with ANAHIT Association, undertook the expedition to the Caribbean Sea islands to search the sunken “Quedakh Merchant” Armenian ship from 1699. The remains of this ship was investigated and shot.

In 2008, Club members began to build a traditional fishing boat of Lake Sevan. In 2009, two of them were already clipping the waves of Sevan. It was 2009 also, when traditional sailboat competition was held for the first time.

Nowadays, AYAS Club processes new research projects.
3. Rationale

“AYAS” Nautical Research Club has been 30 years in the shipping and shipbuilding history, examining and revealing the unknown pages of Armenian studies. The Club regained 26 ship kinds, used in the river and lake navigation of Great Armenia of which two types – medieval merchant vessel of Armenian Kingdom of Cilicia and the Sevan lake fishing boat were built in real size and were tested. “Cilicia” sailing vessel conducted a historical experiment – sailing through Armenian medieval trade sea routes. The expedition was pursuing several objectives, such as the navigation of ships, ship behavior in different conditions – lake, sea, ocean, testes over the course of the wind angle. For the first time the functioning of the medieval symmetrical triangle (Latin) sail was tested. In the result, Ayas club at this point is the only experienced team of professionals and specialists that are familiar with these kinds of experiences.

All the work of AYAS Club was carried out in close cooperation with the Institute of History, which provides the powerful scientific basis and guarantee of success for all the projects.

Club programs are continuous, and periodic conferences are organized to present the results, also gather scientists in the field to and celebrate new horizons.

4. Description

International scientific conference will take from three to five days. Scientists from Armenia and abroad are invited to present reports and releases in the conference. The materials will be published.

During the conference, a photo exhibition will be organized dedicated to the study of topics and activities of the club.

6. Expected Results

Such cooperative conference organization is an ordinal phase of the study in historical heritage of the past centuries, in the history of world civilization introduction of national coverage, especially in the field of navigation and shipbuilding.

IN SEARCH OF THE “QUEDAKH MERCHANT” SUNK VESSEL

By Karen Balayan

In search of “Quedah Merchant” wrecks a joint expedition together with “Anahit” Association was launched on a ketch (2-mast yacht) in winter of 2007 – 2008. During the expedition we discovered some things and investigated the seaboard bottom as well. Unfortunately, the body of the vessel is lost completely, but we were happy to find ship guns covered by the corals.

Just before submerging the “Adventure Galley” Kidd transferred the whole property, including the guns, to the captured Armenian ship. As there were more guns than it was possible to use as a weapon, a part of them was used as ballast; that explains why they were found piled together. On the other hand, the crew, leaving the vessel, took with them and sold everything possible and fired the ship. As a result, no remnants of ship or load are present now.

Now we can imagine ourselves the last days of the “Quedah Merchant”. Obviously, Captain Kidd anchored the vessel in the estuary of La Romana River and left for New York in order to take care of his own problems. Meantime, waiting for their captain, the crew sold the remaining goods piece by piece. Finally, when it became clear that the Captain Kidd won’t return back, his folks sacked everything and fired the ship.

The ES winds are vernacular to this region – they blew all 20 days of our stay at the island. On the other hand the local sea stream is NW and coincides with the wind along the same axes (the wind blows into the compass, and the stream from the compass). That is why, when the anchor cable broke off, the burning ship was taken by the river’s stream to the open sea and stranded at Catalina Island in 3 miles away from the estuary of La Romana River, and at the island’s windward was completely ruined. No captain might anchor a ship at windward when it is possible to turn around the island and to find a convenient and serene harbor. And a couple of facts witness for that assumption. For instance, the site of the wreck is just 3 to 4 meters only (let’s recall that the ship’s displacement was 400 tons, so the depth of the vessel is approximately the same, and, probably, the vessel was touching sea bottom). On the other hand, there was no ship body found, which was wrecked by the swash – the burnt out vessel was thrown onto the rocks by the Eastern side of Catalina Island and the swash, crashing everything, just completed the job. However, we tried to find whatever possible yet. We submerged again and again, toothcombed the bottom up to 35 meters deep, but found nothing except the beauty of the Caribbean.

“CILICIA” sailing ship launching 10-th anniversary

25-28 May 2012

* At 17 of November a meeting with Associated professor Charles Beeker from Indiana University (USA) have took place in the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnography NAS of RA. Mr. Beeker is head of group of underwater archaeologists which are excavating «Quedagh Merchant» during last 4 years. This is an Armenian merchant ship captured by William Kidd in1698 and had sunk there in 1699. By opinion of the professor this is a unique opportunity to research the remains of very unusual vessel. Wood analysis showed, that wood is the teak from Malabar coast of India. Construction of planking connections testified, that the ship had built at Surat city in India. The pieces of planking had been glued! And the most important, that the vessel exactly identified, which is relatively seldom happened. By initiative of professor Beeker the bronze plate with information about the vessel had been established underwater on the site of shipwreck, and the capsule with the Armenian flag immured under the plate as well.
Reminding, that the “AYAS” Nautical Research Club jointly with “ANAHIT” Association have realized the Expedition to the Caribbean to the site of the shipwreck in winter of 2007-2008. Mr. & Mrs. Pavel Galoumyan and Isabella Agad-Galoumyan, founders of the Association, have gave the yacht (ketch) and completely financed the expedition.
Professor Beekers’ excavations had started in 2008.
